Definition
damit — so that / with it
Usage
As conjunction: subordinating (verb to end). As pronoun: damit = with it/that.
Examples
- Ich lerne Deutsch, damit ich in Deutschland arbeiten kann. — I’m learning German so that I can work in Germany.
- Was machst du damit? — What are you doing with it?
- Damit meine ich, dass… — By that I mean that…
Notes
Two uses: conjunction (damit = so that — verb to end) and pronoun (damit = with it/that). damit as conjunction expresses purpose. Contrast: weil (because — reason), damit (so that — purpose).
