Terry Lewis

Bio

Terry Steven Lewis (born November 24, 1956, Omaha, Nebraska) is a Grammy Award-winning music producer, songwriter, and bassist, one half of the legendary production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. His family relocated to Minneapolis early in his life, where he taught himself bass and percussion and became involved in church music. After meeting Jimmy Jam through a University of Minnesota Upward Bound program, the two co-founded Flyte Tyme — later restructured as The Time under Prince. Dismissed in 1982 for outside production work, they formed Flyte Tyme Productions. Lewis specialises in the bass and percussion foundations that underpin the duo’s signature sound — lush, emotional, and rhythmically precise. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, and named to the ASCAP Board of Directors in 2023.
